Grit your teeth and get on with it…….Bruxism – gritting or grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw.

Anyone who suffers from grinding their teeth or clenching their jaw will tell you how painful it can be. It can cause sensitive teeth, headaches, migraines, earache, aching jaw muscles and neck pain, as well as sleep disruption. Bruxism affects 8 – 10% of the population, which is around 6 million people in the UK.

Why would anyone grind their teeth or clench their jaw?

Most people aren’t aware that they are doing this. However, it is directly linked to anxiety, stress and sleeping disorders. Certain medications are known to cause teeth grinding too. I became aware I was clenching my jaw after having numerous driving lessons when I was younger. After a driving lesson my jaw used to ache for a day or two and it became quite painful. Someone said ‘It was because I talked too much!’ Really!!…………

It was only after a driving lesson before my test that I realised what was causing my jaw to ache so much. Once I realised the cause of my jaw ache I was able to stop.

If you grind your teeth or clench your jaw it is most likely that it is a habit. Maybe a past event happened and it triggered a response to grind your teeth or clench your jaw. Perhaps you only do it at night when you are asleep. Either way, you are probably not aware of your behaviour. You may need to go see your dentist for a check up and mention jaw ache and any other symptoms. Your dentist can check your teeth for wear and tear and will offer advice accordingly.

Habits are learned; they are an automatic behaviour that can occur without much conscious thought. Therefore, you can unlearn your bad habits and learn new good habits and behaviours in their place. Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective ways to overcome a bad habit or unwanted behaviour.

I can help you to understand what is causing you to grind your teeth or clench your jaw and with Hypnotherapy I could help you to stop the habit. If it is caused by anxiety and stress then we can address it. Regular exercise can also help to reduce your stress levels.

The greatest side effect of Hypnotherapy is true relaxation of the mind and body. The longer you go without help the worse the problem will get.
